According to reports, Google is developing three “rigid” phones, one Fold replacement, and as many as four Pixel 9 series smartphones. Not to mention, there appears to be a 6.73-inch Pixel 9 Pro XL project called “komodo,” a 6.34-inch Pixel 9 Pro known as “caiman,” a 6.24-inch Pixel 9 known as “tokay,” and last but not least, a Pixel 9 Pro Fold dubbed “comet.”
That’s right, it’s neither a Pixel Fold 2, nor a Pixel 9 Fold, but rather a massive, bulky Pixel 9 Pro Fold, signifying that it is part of Google’s Pixel phone lineup’s 9 series, rather than standing alone like the original Fold from the previous year.
The foldable Pixel 9 model is the one that has been lurking in plain sight, even though all three of the Pixel 9 phones leaked and were even compared to the Pixel 8, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, or the iPhone. That is, until SlashLeaks published a photo of it alongside a ruler and in the NCC’s certification database.
The phone has a bigger screen than the Pixel Fold that came before it. Its proportions appear to have shrunk in one direction and increased in another, based on the ruler adjacent to it. The phone is almost half an inch taller than the 5.50 x 6.25 x 0.23 inches (139.7 x 158.7 x 5.8 mm) Pixel Fold, but when it is opened, the width and height of the phone appear to be nearly equal, giving the phone a more square-like form.
This requires both a larger screen, depending on how narrow the bezels are in comparison to its predecessor, or a new display ratio of the 7.6-inch panel that the first foldable Pixel commanded. The somewhat underwhelming 4560 mAh battery size, which, like other foldables, is made up of two packs that operate simultaneously (1183 mAh and 3377 mAh), was also noted in the NCC database. Given that the Pixel Fold of today has a 4821 mAh battery and a Tensor G4 processor, the display ought to be of a more recent, more energy-efficient OLED version.
The intricate camera island, whose intricate sensor and lens systems stretch across two rows, is another intriguing interpretation of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold prototype images that suggests Google is cooking up something unique in the realm of photography.
We’re eager to see if the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be recognized as the folding phone with the best camera available—a feature that sets this sort of flexible phone apart from its more “rigid” counterparts. There is undoubtedly a periscope zoom lens, but there is also an additional lens that is absent from the original Fold.
