New Snapdragon W5+ and W5 Gen 1 Wearable Platforms

Qualcomm is launching two new wearable chipsets today following the release of its teasers last week. has unveiled the Gen 1 and W5+ Gen 1 platforms to replace the 4100+ platform. Both SoCs are constructed using the 4nm and significantly outperform Qualcomm’s wearables product.

In comparison to the Snapdragon Wear 4100+ Platform, Qualcomm claims that its new wearable chipsets would deliver up to 2X the performance while utilising half the power. The W5+ can offer up to 50% more battery life in common situations while taking up 30% less space than earlier models. For the past few quarters, Qualcomm and have collaborated intensively to make Wear OS suitable for the new SoC.

enable fresh, segment-driven demands

The several divisions of the wearables market must provide support for new features and use cases as the sector develops. For instance, the fitness and wellness wearables category highlights the requirement for precise and low-power health data tracking. Wearables for children and the elderly must include a 4G LTE connection, camera-based use cases, smaller IDs, and longer battery life. Our Snapdragon W5+ and W5 platforms are developed to meet these changing demands and quicken segment growth.

The absence of the AON Co-Processor in the Snapdragon W5 non-Plus edition is the primary distinction between the Snapdragon W5 and W5+ Gen 1. It plans to use the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 in segment-specific wearables because such devices won’t need the additional power-saving features. Wearables for the China, Kids, Seniors, Health, and Business segments are included in this.

Four Cortex A53 cores and one Cortex M55 efficiency core running at 250 MHz make up the W5+ Gen 1 processor. The A702 GPU, clocked at 1 GHz (a major increase from the 4100+’s 320 MHz A504 GPU), is responsible for graphics, and memory has been enhanced to enable LPDDR4 at 2133 MHz. There has also been a new Machine Learning unit U55 installed.

Activate premium user experiences

Customers desire additional features and functionality in sleeker, smaller forms with longer battery lives as they seek out premium user experiences. The market is crying out for responsive apps, quicker speed, and limitless potential.

The new co-processor in the Snapdragon W5+ can manage more background operations while consuming less power. The W5+ Gen 1’s AON (always on) Co-Processor (22nm) is now capable of handling speech processing, audio playback, and notifications in addition to handling all of the wearable sensors. Additionally, the AON chip offers support for new power modes including Deep Sleep and Hibernate and enables low-power Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi, GNSS, and other technologies. A low-power modem upgrade is also coming to LTE.
