Despite this, numerous smartphone makers have filed a patent for a phone with a flexible screen that wraps around the housing partially or entirely. LetsGoDigital previously covered an Honor smartphone with a wrap-around display. Oppo is also said to be working on a dual-sided smartphone.
Samsung is another notable smartphone maker that has previously documented many phone designs with a display surface on the back. LetsGoDigital was the first to report about a Samsung phone featuring a dual-sided display in 2018. Samsung still sees such products as having a future, according to a new patent.
The Samsung Galaxy smartphone has a display that wraps around the whole device
Samsung Electronics submitted a patent application with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) in July 2021 for a “Method and equipment for performing functionalities of an electronic device with a flexible display.” The 46-page document was published on November 18, 2021, and it is also placed in the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) database for global patent protection.
Previously, the focus of the documentation was on the flexible screen; now, the focus is on the control choices. Graphic artist Parvez Khan, alias Technizo Concept, has designed a series of 3D models based on Samsung’s patent to get a better feel for this unique smartphone. As indicated in the lengthy description, the Samsung wrap-around display smartphone can be operated using both the touchscreen and pen input. Samsung has previously demonstrated that it can make the S Pen work with a flexible screen with the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The Z Fold 3 is the first folding phone that supports the S Pen.

The user may shift material from the front display to the back screen — and vice versa – with a simple swipe. Content can also be presented on both sides depending on the application. This does not, however, apply just to the Photo Gallery. The patent description mentions a number of different operating situations, such as using an internet browser, using a messaging app, viewing movies, and so on. The phone can sense the user’s grip on the device and adjust the interface appropriately.
Samsung also notes in the paperwork the possibility of integrating a projector and/or holographic capabilities, in which 3D pictures are projected in the air utilising light interference. A Samsung holographic smartphone was also caught by the business in 2018.
In addition, the integration of water, gas, and electricity measurement equipment is examined. It also suggests using medical sensors to monitor your blood sugar level, heart rhythm, and blood pressure. Of course, not all of these characteristics are required. Samsung, on the other hand, is looking into all options in order to be able to combine the most useful features.
Samsung’s smartphone with a wrap-around display also allows wireless charging. Of course, there’s also the option of using a wired charger. The USB Type-C port, as well as a speaker and microphone, are located at the bottom of the device.

However, because the gadget has a huge screen on both sides, the display is more likely to be damaged – even when carried in a purse or pocket. Furthermore, due to the form factor, using a phone case will be tough.
