Samsung continues to expand its mid-range selection with two devices that are very identical. We’re already aware of the Galaxy A53 5G, which we’ve evaluated as one of the finest inexpensive Android phones available. It will be joined by the Galaxy A73 5G in May 2022, which is essentially a little bigger, slightly updated version of the Galaxy A73.

The price change from 29,700 to 35,979 in India corresponds to the increase in screen size and technical characteristics. At the time of writing, the A73’s availability is somewhat limited, with India being the largest market and Samsung Levant also listing the phone — the company says it’ll be available in “select markets,” so more could be added in the future.

Both phones are designed on the same principles, with a plastic-backed chassis that houses the camera module in a soft raised region. Meanwhile, both versions have a remarkable flat 120Hz SuperAMOLED display with an adequate Full HD+ display quality, matching the smoothness you’ll find in many more costly devices.

The key difference is that the A53 has a 6.5-inch display, whilst the A73 has a 6.7-inch diagonal display. Both phones fall into the large phone category, however, the A73 may be worth considering if you want a bigger screen for movies and games.

Perfection in the mid-range

In mid-2022, the less expensive of these two phones is a solid all-rounder and the mid-range phone to beat. The A53 is a budget-friendly phone with exceptional photography skills, particularly from its primary camera, and ample battery life. However, avid mobile gamers may not find it to be a good match.

Upgrade to the Galaxy A73 5G for a bigger screen, a higher-end primary camera with a stunning 108MP resolution, and a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G processor that may perform better in visually demanding games. However, it is only available in a few countries.

Specifications for Hardware

The remainder of the specs is nearly comparable across both versions, including a 5,000mAh battery that comfortably delivered more than a full day’s worth of power in our testing of the A53. Despite its bigger display, early assessments suggest that the A57 will last about as long as the A55. Neither model has wireless charging, but both deliver the same 25 watts through a wire, which is the same as Samsung’s top S22 and S22+.

In all models, value-added features like IP67 water and dust resistance, as well as optical in-screen fingerprint recognition, are welcome additions. Samsung’s outstanding software update pledge also extends to both phones, with each receiving four years of Android upgrades from the time of introduction. As a result, both are supported up to Android 16.

For hardware enthusiasts, the CPU is the most significant distinction. The Galaxy A53 is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 1280 CPU, a respectable mid-range engine that we found to be quite powerful for everyday app use, with the exception of strenuous gaming sessions. The A73, on the other hand, features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G processor. This processor, which was initially introduced in mid-2021, outperforms the Exynos 1280 in graphics-intensive tasks.

However, both processors should be more than capable of handling ordinary chores. Your memory demands will be readily met with both phones’ configurations of up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, plus microSD expansion.

The primary camera sensor on the Galaxy A73 5G has also been upgraded. While the A53’s main sensor is fully adequate at 64MP, the A73’s primary camera offers a stunning 108MP resolution. Because of the bigger sensor size, you’ll get crisper low-light pictures. Also, since neither the A53 nor the A73 has a dedicated telephoto camera, there should be more area for excellent digitally zoomed shots. (The secondary cameras, including the 32-megapixel front-facing camera, are similar in both variants.)

Which one should you purchase?

The Galaxy A53 5G and Galaxy A73 5G are both excellent mid-range phones that are well worth they’re asking prices. If the A73 is available where you live and you’re willing to spend the extra money, we believe it’s a good investment. While both feature respectable physical characteristics, the A73’s speedier CPU, higher-resolution camera, and the larger screen will provide a better overall experience.

Even if you live in a country where the A73 is available, the Galaxy A53 5G is still a great deal if you want to save a little money. And if you’re not a huge mobile player or the minor photographic enhancement isn’t a big issue for you — especially if you’re not a big gamer — you might want to think about it.

If you do have the additional cash and the Galaxy A73 5G is available where you live, you’ll get more out of it than the A53, including smoother gameplay, a larger screen, and a better primary camera.
