Although Samsung is the leading maker of foldable smartphones, it does not have the category to itself, with new OEMs joining the fold every year; OPPO, Vivo, Huawei, and Honor all have at least one model on the market. Then there’s Motorola, which has already released two iterations of its clamshell Razr series, with more on the way. Next up is the codename Maven, a flagship-class gadget with top-of-the-line specifications that will be released this summer and is seen for the first time here.
Maven, which has been completely overhauled, looks more like the Galaxy Z Flip3 than the Razr or Razr 5G. It seeks to enhance its image game with twin back cameras, as Samsung has done with Flip, by making it somewhat boxier and more squared-off than its predecessors (but also removing the chin and relocating the fingerprint sensor to the power button). A 50-megapixel, f/1.8 main camera is included, as well as a hybrid wide-angle and macro sensor with a native resolution of 13MP. It has a 32MP punch-hole selfie camera on the inside of the foldable FHD+ display.
Motorola Maven First Look
Motorola had planned to release two versions of the phone: one with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 system-on-chip and another with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus variant (SM8475). However, given the alleged supply delays for the later SoC, it’s unclear how Moto plans to handle the SKUs that have it. There will be many memory options available, including 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of internal storage.
The new Razr promises to bring the same dramatic generation-to-generation upgrades we’ve come to anticipate from previous early entries to the foldable category — Quartz Black and Tranquil Blue — shipping to China first in late July or early August, followed by a worldwide release later. as well as the premium cost that usually comes with them.
