M2 Ultra, a new system on a chip (SoC) from Apple that completes the M2 family and offers significant performance improvements for the Mac, was announced today. The new Mac Studio and Mac Pro are the most potent Mac desktops ever produced thanks to the M2 Ultra, the largest and most capable chip Apple has ever produced. The performance of the M2 Ultra is doubled because of the utilization of Apple ground-breaking UltraFusion technology, which connects the die of two M2 Max chips utilizing a second-generation 5-nanometer manufacturing process.

There are 134 billion transistors in M2 Ultra, 20 billion more than in M1 Ultra. Its unified memory architecture offers a memory bandwidth of 800GB/s, which is twice as fast as M2 Max, and a maximum memory capacity of 192GB, which is a breakthrough increase of 50% over M1 Ultra. The M2 Ultra has an improved CPU that is 20% faster than the M1 Ultra, a bigger GPU that is up to 30% faster, and a Neural Engine that is up to 40% quicker. For blistering Fast acceleration, it also has a media engine with twice the power of the M2 Max. With all these improvements, M2 Ultra once again raises the bar for Mac performance.

According to Johny Srouji, senior vice president of Hardware Technology at Apple, “M2 Ultra delivers astounding performance and capabilities for our pro users’ most demanding workflows while keeping Apple silicon’s industry-leading power efficiency.” “M2 Ultra is the most powerful processor ever made for a personal computer,” according to the manufacturer, “with enormous performance advances in the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine paired with large memory bandwidth in a single SoC.”

M2 Ultra Chip UltraFusion Technology that is Revolutionary in the Industry

Two M2 Max chips are joined via UltraFusion, Apple’s industry-leading, proprietary packaging technology, to create M2 Ultra. With over 10,000 signals connecting the dies in the silicon interposer used by UltraFusion, over 2.5 TB/s of low-latency interprocessor bandwidth is made available.

Unrivalled power efficiency and performance

M2 Ultra’s 24-core CPU, which outperforms M1 Ultra by up to 20%, is made up of 16 next-generation high-performance cores and 8 next-generation high-efficiency cores. As a comparison to Mac Studio with M1 Ultra, colorists using DaVinci Resolve will benefit from up to 50% faster video processing with Mac Studio powered by M2 Ultra.

The next-generation core count for the GPU can be set at 60 or 76. Comparing this to the highly strong GPU of the M1 Ultra, there are up to 12 more cores and an improvement of up to 30%. Octane on Mac Studio with M2 Ultra renders 3D effects up to three times faster than Octane on Mac Studio with M1 Ultra.

Unified Memory Architecture: A Game-Changer

A unique feature of Apple hardware, the unified memory architecture offers an unrivalled power economy, amazing bandwidth, and minimal latency. M2 Ultra has a system memory bandwidth of 800GB/s, which is far higher than that of a PC. Additionally, it can be configured with a whopping 192GB of unified memory, opening up workflows that are not conceivable on a PC. The most powerful discrete GPU, for instance, is unable to even process the huge machine learning workloads that M2 Ultra can train on a single device.

  • Using a 32-core Neural Engine, M2 Ultra offers performance that is 40% quicker than M1 Ultra at 31.6 trillion operations per second.
  • The powerful media engine accelerates video processing even more by having two times as many capabilities as M2 Max. More than any PC chip is capable of, the M2 Ultra can play back up to 22 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video thanks to its hardware-enabled, dedicated H.264, HEVC, and ProRes encoding and decode.
  • The display engine can power up to six Pro Display XDRs, totalling more than 100 million pixels.
  • Best-in-class security is provided by the most recent Secure Enclave, as well as hardware-verified secure boot and runtime anti-exploitation technologies.

Enhanced Environmental Protection

Even the most demanding professional users may explore new avenues thanks to M2 Ultra’s power-efficient performance, which doesn’t compromise environmental responsibility.

Apple currently operates carbon-neutrally on a global scale, and by 2030 it hopes to have a net-zero climate effect throughout the entire organization, including all product life cycles and manufacturing supply chains. This implies that every chip produced by Apple will be completely carbon neutral throughout the whole manufacturing process.

The switch from Mac to Apple Silicon is now complete

The new Mac Pro is powered by M2 Ultra, completing the transition of the Mac to Apple silicon and revolutionizing the experience on laptops and desktops. The Mac is entering a new era, propelled by ongoing innovation in Apple silicon.
