A few years ago, it appeared like gaming phones were about to enter the mainstream since numerous tier 1 brands, including Samsung, actively expressed interest in partnering with “specialists” firms like Asus and Razer to assist the relatively tiny niche expand and appeal to an ever-larger audience.

Hardcore gamers have few excellent mobile choices now that that… didn’t really happen after all, especially in areas like the US. The ROG Phone family, whose sixth member was quietly introduced earlier today, is maybe the best option overall.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor inside the Asus ROG Phone 6 will set a new (Android) standard in terms of raw speed, and both the “regular” and “Pro” versions will be offered at some point in the near future. The ROG Phone 6 will follow the Snapdragon 888-powered ROG Phone 5 for at least 15 months.

Hardcore gamers have few excellent mobile choices now that that… didn’t really happen after all, especially in areas like the US. The ROG Phone family, whose sixth member was quietly introduced earlier today, is maybe the best option overall.

Naturally, that’s not the only cutting-edge feature of these beasts, which are designed from top to bottom to give unmatched gaming experiences for longer periods of time with a huge 6,000mAh battery while still remaining cool during those prolonged playing sessions.

Both the inside GameCool thermal system and the external clip-on AeroActive Cooler attachment have been improved to their sixth incarnations in order to do that, utilising a variety of cutting-edge technologies to prevent overheating under the most demanding circumstances.

The GameCool 6 system claims to lower the ROG Phone 6’s CPU temperature by up to 10 degrees Celsius thanks to a larger-than-ever vapour chamber (among other significantly improved components). This may not sound like much until you consider the up to 25 degrees the AeroActive Cooler 6 add-on can lower from the “surface temperature near the CPU.”

If that seems a bit excessive, don’t worry—the newest mobile powerhouse from Asus is also outfitted with the appropriate hardware to ensure that CPU temps won’t drop dangerously low when you’re playing less taxing games.

The quirky RGB lighting system on the phone’s back is once again its most striking design feature, at least in terms of the “regular” ROG Phone 6. The ROG Phone 6 Pro, on the other hand, distinguishes itself from its more understated sibling mostly because of a tiny 2-inch OLED panel on its back cover that employs a novel technology dubbed ROG Vision to display a variety of eye-catching animations.

Although it isn’t really practical, the secondary display will undoubtedly help the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro stand out from the competition in terms of design and even personalization, enabling users to make their own unique animations.

The main 6.78-inch Samsung-made AMOLED screen is without a doubt a key selling point for both the ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro, bringing the ROG Phone 5’s already stunning 144Hz refresh rate to a whole new level of fluidity. This is in addition to all the clever cooling tricks, powerful new SoC, and decidedly conspicuous (mostly in a good way) design.

You’re looking at 165Hz refresh rate possibilities, which Asus sees as a far more significant advance over the 120Hz technology supported by the majority of current high-end Android phones than you may imagine.

Unfortunately for photographers, the possibly most cutting-edge smartphone display is not accompanied by an equally outstanding camera system. The ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro’s rear cameras combine Sony’s “flagship” IMX766 50MP sensor with a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5MP macro lens to produce what seems like a passable but not particularly exceptional shooting experience.

The Asus ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro’s retail price is undoubtedly a contributing factor to the cameras’ inferiority to, say, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra photographic capabilities.

These bad boys are expected to cost $1,000 and $1,000, respectively, in the US, when (and if) they reach the North American area. On the old continent, at least, you’re looking at beginning pricing of €999 and €1299, respectively.

That’s already quite expensive, and with the amazing specs and features mentioned above, along with the dual front-facing speakers, the 65W charger that comes right in the box, Android 12 pre-installed on the software side of things, 5G connectivity (depending on the market and carrier), and everything else, some concessions had to be made to stay under the $1,500 mark.

With the ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro carrying 512 and 18 (!!!) gigabytes, respectively, and the non-Pro model “settling” for 256GB local digital storage space and your choice of 8 or 12GB RAM, there are obviously no sacrifices to be made in the storage and memory categories.
