OnePlus’s ever-expanding and increasingly muddled Nord family of mid-range smartphones, get prepared for even more perplexity.

Taking a lesson from the company’s pre-2021 flagships, it appears that last year’s Nord 2 5G device will get a modest T-branded upgrade as well as a full-fledged sequel in the near future.

Differentiating yourself from the rest of the Nord crowd

The 6.43-inch OnePlus Nord 2T 5G is today rendered in press-friendly quality, showcasing both its front and back panels after a previous leak of only the latter in an unusual sandstone finish. This is not to be confused with the recently released Nord CE 2 5G or the upcoming Nord CE 2 Lite 5G and Nord N20 5G.

The renderings are playing it safe this time around in terms of colours and finishes, but the rear-facing camera system still manages to catch our attention with its… unconventionality. The rectangular module, which houses two flashlights (for unknown functions) and two circular rings, looks like nothing we’ve ever seen before in the mobile industry (for better or worse).

While the top ring has a big main sensor with a 50MP resolution, the lower ring houses two considerably smaller image sensors with 8MP ultra-wide-angle and 2MP monochrome resolutions, respectively.

Of course, the Nord 2T’s visage is far more traditional and recognisable, closely approximating that of the original? The remaining features will be comparable to those of the OnePlus Nord 2. The phone’s specifications have previously been leaked multiple times, but due to our partnership with industry insider Yogesh Brar, we now have the first look at the OnePlus Nord 2T’s design.

The OnePlus Nord 2 has the same prominent “chin” and razor-thin top and side bezels as the OnePlus Nord, as well as an identical top left-mounted hole punch, tipped to house the same 32MP selfie camera.

The display is also likely to remain the same, with the same old (but fantastic) Full HD+ resolution and smooth 90Hz refresh rate capabilities, as well as a 4,500mAh battery, up to 12 gigabytes of RAM combined with 256GB internal storage space, and yes, a good old fashioned headphone jack.

Other enhancements and improvements

Surprisingly, the OnePlus Nord 2T should run Android 12 (with OxygenOS on top) out of the box, despite the fact that it is equipped with a Dimensity 1300 CPU. This bad boy, which was just announced last month, could deliver a significant raw power boost over the Dimensity 1200 found inside the Nord 2, and based on early benchmarks of other new MediaTek chipsets, it may also give Qualcomm-made rivals a run for their money.

That really is, assuming OnePlus manages to keep the pricing of this handset competitive, which is generally not an issue. But don’t hold your breath for an official release in the United States; it’s unlikely to happen. In other news, we anticipate an official announcement later this month or in May at the earliest.

Given that the Nord 2 5G generally begins at €399 on the old continent, we’re guessing a European MSRP of roughly €450 and higher for the phone’s T version. That’s presumably for an entry-level model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, which will most likely forego a microSD card port but preserve the helpful alert slider, as well as the 3.5mm audio connection and other essential features like stereo speakers.
