Google I/O 2022, Google unveiled the Pixel 6a. It’s an even more cheap version of the Pixel 6 series, with the same Tensor processor as last year’s flagship and a starting price of $449.

With the Pixel 6 last year, Google introduced a new design language, and the Pixel 6a has a nearly identical aesthetic, with the same metal frame along the device’s edge. It is, however, a little smaller, with a 6.1″ 1080p OLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It’s available in three hues: Chalk, Charcoal, and Sage, which are all quite similar to existing Pixel 6 colours in slightly different shades.

It Pixel 6a is the first gadget in the A-series to employ the same Tensor chip as the Pixel 6 series from last year. Unlike in previous years, consumers who choose the less expensive phone had to sacrifice power. Instead, all of Google’s Pixel-exclusive capabilities, such as Live Translate, Live Caption, and the company’s fancy Recorder app, are also available on the 6a, thanks to the company’s bespoke hardware. The experience should be quick thanks to 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

While a camera bar on the rear of the phone looks identical, it’s here that Google has made some cost-cutting cuts. It has hardware identical to the Pixel 5 — but with the appearance and feel of the Pixel 6. It has a 12.2MP primary lens and a 12MP ultrawide lens. Software-based improvements such as Real Tone, Night Sight, and Magic Eraser — which can now modify the colours of specific objects in images — are all included. Meanwhile, selfie enthusiasts may rest easy, since the front-facing camera is identical to that of the Pixel 6.
